Report: Growing number of business suspensions in Poland due to COVID-9 epidemic

From March 1 to April 6, 2020, 4 times more entrepreneurs conducting sole proprietorships in Poland have suspended their business than last year in the same period.

In individual weeks of the coronavirus epidemic and introduction of further economic restrictions, the situation in the CEIDG (Central Registration and Information on Business) was as follows:

  • 1-7 March 2020 | First COVID-19 infections in Poland | 10,851 business activities were suspended (for comparison, in the period 1-7/03/2019 4,437 activities were suspended)
  • March 8-14, 2020 | Poland closes its borders, a ban on mass gatherings is introduced, concerts and sporting events are canceled, cinemas, theaters, pubs and restaurants are closed | 4,751 business activities were suspended (for comparison, in the period 8-14.03.2019 717 activities were suspended)
  • March 15-21, 2020 | Gyms are closed and a ban on providing short-term rental services is introduced | 6895 activities were suspended (for comparison, in the period 15-21.03.2019 781 activities were suspended)
  • March 22-28, 2020 | A ban on trade in shopping malls is introduced 3783 activities were suspended (for comparison, in the period 22-28.03.2019 941 activities were suspended)
  • March 29 – April 6, 2020 | Hairdressing, cosmetics, tattoo and piercing salons, and physiotherapy are banned | 29 857 activities were suspended (for comparison, 6778 activities were opened in the period March 29 – April 6, 2019)

Due to the fact that every week of economic paralysis with the COVID-19 epidemic and the anxieties associated with the current situation are clearly reflected in changes in Polish commercial registers, we launch a service monitoring the status of business activity in CEIDG and KRS, thus supporting the minimization of the risk of business cooperation with companies that cease to exist overnight.

The service is available in an easy and quick form of xls / csv file exchange – all you have to do is send us a file with the company’s NIP numbers, and the next day we send back the current status of up to 200,000 entities.

Possible business statuses are as follows in each of the main business registers:

  • statuses in the CEIDG register: active / suspended / deleted / inactive / the activity is conducted only in the form of a civil law partnership / companies
  • statuses in the National Court Register KRS: active / liquidation / bankruptcy liquidation / deleted / suspended / restructuring.
